Assurance (HMS), shipwreck
From Wightpedia
On 24 April 1753, the naval frigate HMS Assurance was nearing the end of its cross Atlantic voyage from Jamaica when the captain tried to take a short cut through the Needles channel. The ship collided with the outer rock and was totally wrecked, however, no lives were lost.
The ship was carrying Edward Trelawney, the Governor of Jamaica from 1738 to 1752. Trelawny arrived in London four days after the shipwreck.
