Church of the Sacred Heart, Shanklin
A Roman Catholic Church has been on Atherley Road Shanklin site since 1888.
The 1888 church building was a 'tin church'. That was replaced in 1907 by a permanent brick church in the Flemish Gothic style, shown below. It was to the design of the Rev. Benedict Williamson and the builder was Mr. George Hayles[1].
During WW2 the 1907 church received bomb damaged in 3 January 1943 which led to its demolition. A temporary church was established on the site until January 1956 when it was removed to enable construction of the new building.
A new church (the one illustrated at the top of this page) was built 1956/7 and opened 28th June 1957. It was to the design of Mr. R. Lethieullier Gilbert (senior partner of Messrs. Gilbert and Hobson, of Ventnor) and Marehetti Ltd., of Portsmouth were the chief contractors.[2]
