Clock Tower and Drinking Fountain, Esplanade, Shanklin

The clock tower on Shanklin, Isle of Wight esplanade was erected to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
The foundation stone was laid by the lady of Shanklin Manor (Mrs. White-Popham) on 5th April 1899. At that time the cost was estimated at about £200, of which £150 had been so far raised[1].
On the seaward side is a plaque reading:
SUBSCRIPTION FROM THE LORD OF THE MANOR AND THE INHABITANTS OF SHANKLIN TO COMMEMORATE THE DIAMOND JUBILEE OF QUEEN VICTORIA 1897 |
On the road side of the tower is another plaque which reads:
BY THE MAYOR OF SHANKLIN TO COMMEMORATE THE DIAMOND JUBILEE OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II 2012 |
A drinking fountain is incorporated on the southern face.
