Freshwater Gate

Freshwater Gate is the old name for the 'hamlet' north of the shore of Freshwater Bay.
In the 19th century, the gates at the western end of the Military Road were in this area, but maps predating the road's construction show the area as Freshwater Gate.
Some references suggest that the 'Gate' refers to the gap in the downs (Afton Down to the east, Tennyson Down to the west), other references suggest it refers to the land bridge between the western 'island' separated by the River Yar and Afton Marshes from the rest of the Isle of Wight.
