Pride of the Sea, shipwreak

The Pride of the Sea was a Pilot Lugger from Walmer which was wrecked on the Yellow Ledge, near Luccombe with the loss of all all hand during a gale on the night of 29 October 1887.

The bodies of the crew were buried in Shanklin Cemetery.

The inscription reads:

IN MEMORY OF

WILLIAM MOSS AGED 48
CHARLES MOSS AGED 38
CHARLES L. SELTH AGED 51
HENRY KIRKALDIE AGED 34
OWNERS AND CREW OF THE WALMER LUGGER PRIDE OF THE SEA
WHICH WITH ALL HANDS AS ABOVE NAMED
WAS LOST IN THE GALE OF THE NIGHT OF 29 OCT 1887
OFF SHANKLIN IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT.
