Bembridge School

John Howard Whitehouse established a boarding school for boys on 16 May 1919. He had previously, in 1914, purchased two fields overlooking Whitecliff Bay and used them as a site for his Secondary School Boy's Camp for deprived children and the adjacent house for his own use. He was influenced by the writings of John Ruskin and those writings influenced the teaching at Bembridge School. Mr. Whitehouse was a collector of Ruskins books, letters, manuscripts etc. and established two galleries at the school to house his collection.(Isle of Wight County Press - 17 June 1994 page 51 - school's 75th anniversary)

1935 - Bembridge School, White Cliff Bay

1951 - Bembridge School, J. H. Whitehouse, head master, Whitecliff bay

1955 - J. H. Whitehouse died in September 1955, his cremated remains were placed in the Bembridge School Chapel.(Isle of Wight County Press - 1 October 1955 - page 9)

1994 - The Ruskin collection of John H. Whitehouse was moved to a new library extension at Lancaster University.(Isle of Wight County Press - 8 July 1994 page 40)

1995 - In April 1995 it was announced that Bembridge School had been purchased by Ryde School with Upper Chine.(Isle of Wight County Press - 28 April 1995 page 1)
