Somerton Walrus crash - June 1945
From Wightpedia
On 27 June 1945, a Walrus flying boat crashed after take off from Somerton Airfield at Northwood and was a total loss.
After taking off from Somerton Airfield a Walrus flying boat crashed on a piece of open ground and in the front garden of a bungalow on the opposite side of the Newport-Cowes road. Shortly after crashing the plane caught fire.
The aircraft was being piloted by a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary, Miss Ann Walker - so the aircraft had probably been repaired by Saunders-Roe who used the airfield. Miss Walker was rescued from the wreckage and taken to the Frank James Cottage Hospital at East Cowes suffering from shock and fractured ribs.[1]
