St Mary with St Rhadegund's Church, Whitwell
From Wightpedia
St Mary with St Rhadegund's Church, Whitwell has twin dedications as the result of two chapels being combined.
In the 12th century the Lord of the Manor at Gatcombe built a chapel for the tenants of his land at Whitwell; this was dedicated to St Rhadegund.
Later, in the 13th century, a separate chapel was built on the south side of the existing one by the Lords of the Manor of Stenbury for his tenants in St Lawrence and the Undercliff; this chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
In the 16th century the chapels were rebuilt into one structure.[1]
As well as burials in the churchyard, a detached churchyard was opened in 1914 in Ashknowle Lane.
