St Paul's Church, Gatten, Shanklin

The foundation stone for the grade II[1] church of St. Paul's, on Regent Street (Victorian times, Station Road), Shanklin was laid in January 1875. The church was built to a design by C. L Luck, architect of London, W. H. Coussmaker, of Shanklin, acted as clerk of the works, and Robert Allen, of Seaview was the contractor.[2]
The church was consecrated in July 1876 by the Bishop of Winchester[3], at that time it was within the ecclesiastical district of Sandown.
On 17th February 1943 an enemy bomb passed horizontally through the church and exploded in the vicarage killing the Vicar (the Rev. R. B. Irons), his wife and the other occupants. The church was repaired and re-opened in February 1947.[4]
