St Saviour's Roman Catholic Church, Totland

The Grade II listed[1] Roman Catholic Church of St Saviour's at Totland dates from 1923.

The Italianate style church was designed by Messrs. J. H. and W. C. Mangan, architects, of Preston and was erected by Mr. F. J. Privett, M.P., of Southsea. The church was dedicated by the Bishop of Portsmouth, the Rt. Rev. W. T. Cotter, in August 1923.

The new church replaced a private chapel at Weston Manor, the home of the Ward family, where local Catholics had taken Sunday Mass since 1871 but which was no longer large enough for the local congregation. On his death, Mr. Edmund Granville Ward (1882-1915), of Northwood and Weston, had bequeathed the greater part of the money necessary for the erection and endowment of the church.

The Chapel of St. Saviour's at Weston Manor had been erected in 1871 by William George Ward (1912-1882), the father of Edmund Granville Ward. That chapel had been built by the elder Pugin.[2]
