Stroud Wood Brick Works
Stroud Wood Brick Works, to the south of the road from Upton to Havenstreet, Isle of Wight, is shown on OS maps from 1864
The 1864 and 1898 maps show the Brick Field as just the west part shown on later maps; by the 1909 map, the Brick Works appears extended to the east; and by 1946 only the east extension is shown. The 1972 OS map identifies the west section as Coleman's Wood with a number of ponds and the east section as a Builder's Yard.
Notice for an Auction by the Administrator of the Estate of the Late Mr. William Tayler 7 June 1887 included:
LOT1. - The valuable freehold property, known as "Coleman's Wood," comprising a detached stone-built RESIDENCE with 12 rooms and large garden, together with the brick-yard, stabling, sheds, and brick kilns, wherein the business of a brick and tile manufacturer has been carried on for the past 30 years, containing in all about five acres[1].
At the auction the lot was purchased for £500 by Mr. I. Barton[2].
The 1911 Kelly's Street directory records Mrs. Jane Woodnutt as Brick Maker, Stroudwood, Upton.
The 1927 Kelly's Street directory records Charles Langdon, brick maker, Stroudwood, Upton (as well as 'builder, 44 Player street & Star street').
