Surviving Toll Houses
See this list of Toll Houses etc of the Isle of Wight Highways Commissioners in the 19th century.
Surviving confirmed Toll Houses are at:
- Afton, near Freshwater - appears to be incorporated into extended building on western corner of junction.
- Dallimores/Northwood - on Newport Road, Northwood, by the side of the old reservoir.
- Hulverstone, near Brook.
- St Lawrence.
Reputed/suggested Toll Houses and why there's a query on them.
The Round House, Fairlee Road, Newport: - The Grade II Listing for the Round House refers to it as a ‘Toll House’, however, the 1864 OS map shows both the Round House and the ‘Fairlee T.P.’ (between Halberry Lane and the entrance to Fairlee House). In addition, the Round House is not built on the road line (as others are), so it probably wouldn’t work well as a Toll House.
The Round House, Cowes: Place Road/Tuttons Hill junction - There are some suggestions that this Round House was the Toll House at Debourne, but it seems in slightly the wrong position – it is certainly there on maps which show the Debourne Turnpike gate.
The Toll House, Castle Road, Newport: The 1864 map shows the turnpike gate nearer Carisbrooke Road than this building and the Highways Commissioners minutes 24 April 1889 record that the Castle Road Toll House was demolished.
The Tollgate Cottage, Church Road, Shanklin: This building is probably on the site of the Toll Bar but the outline shown on maps have changed over the years.
'Toll House' at junction of Marlborough Road and Appley Road, Ryde: Sometimes referred to as a Toll House, at other times as a Lodge for St. John's House. There's no indication that a Toll Gate was ever in this position.
