Whitwell village pound
From Wightpedia
Village Pounds were used from medieval times to hold stray animals until they were retrieved by their owners after having paid a fine.
The Victorian OS maps show the Whitwell village Pound on the east side of the main road, the 1866 map shows the pound next to a Smithy (later maps show a Smithy, further down the road, on the western side). By the 1939 OS map, the site of the village pound is occupied a large building.
Today (2024) Whitwell Garage occupies the sites of the village Pound and earlier Smithy.
