William Henry Long, birth place plaque, Calbourne

William Henry Long was the author of 'A Dictionary of the Isle of Wight Dialect' and other works. William Henry was born in Grant's Cottage, Lynch Lane, Calbourne, Isle of Wight in 1839, son of Eliza Long; he spent his early years with his grandparents, Isaac and Jane Long.

AUTHOR OF THE I.W. DIALECT
DICTIONARY AND OTHER WORKS:
EDITOR OF THE OGLANDER MEMOIRS,
WAS BORN IN THIS HOUSE
OCTOBER 6TH 1839.

'A Dictionary of the Isle of Wight Dialect' was published in 1886, at which time William Henry was married and a bookseller in Portsmouth.[1]

William Henry Long died at Alexandra Road, Portsmouth, 11 June 1896 from heart failure.[2]

William Henry Long's widow, Elizabeth Ann, died 27 April 1925 while living in Ryde, Isle of Wight and is buried in Ryde Cemetery[3], together with her married daughter, Amy Eleanor Thearle, who died in 1928.
