Wroxall Methodist Chapels
The Methodist Chapel on Wroxall High Street, illustrated above, was opened in February 1887, replacing a previous chapel built some 50 years previous. Built in a plain Gothic style, it was designed to accommodate 200 people by Mr. E. J. Harvey, of Ventnor, and built by Mr. H. Wallis, of Wroxall. Artificial light was provided by six, four-light chandeliers burning paraffin oil.[1]
Late a hall was built alongside the chapel. The chapel closed in 2020 and has been converted into residential housing; the Methodists now meet in the Hall.
The Primitive Methodist Chapel
The Primitive Methodist Chapel, on St John's Road, Wroxall appears to have been in existence from 1874 to 1949.[2] From the dates, it is possible that they relocated and used the Iron Church which was replaced by the new St John the Evangelist Church, Wroxall which was built in 1875.
By the 1930's, the chapel was a stone built building fronting the mall and an 'iron building' behind it was the Sunday School.
Today (2023), the stone chapel building has been converted into a private residence (The Chapel House); the Sunday School building behind is occupied by Island Joinery.
