Lime has been used for centuries as a building material and to improve soil for crop farming.
As a building material, lime was largely used to form mortar and render.
In farming, spreading lime on clay soils, which can be found in large parts of the northern island, improved the soil for growing crops.
Lime is formed by burning chalk, a material which is readily available throughout the island, in kilns and these kilns became a familiar feature throughout the island.
Today, three lime kilns remain; at Moons Hill, Freshwater, Strawberry Lane, Mottistone and Lime Kiln Shute, Newchurch.
