East Cowes Bible Christian Chapel
The church on the corner of Clarence Road and Falcon Road, originally a Bible Christian chapel, dates from the mid 19th century. In June 1888 memorial stones were laid for new class rooms higher up Falcon Road[1].
In 1897 a new Bible Christian chapel with seating for 270 was opened adjacent to the old chapel with the main entrance from the ‘upper road’ (Osborne Road). The architect was Mr. J. Newman, and the contractor was Messrs. W. Brading and Son[2].
By 1911 the chapel was part of the United Methodist circuit[3]. By 1935 it was one of two Methodist chapels in the town[4].
During WWII the building suffered damage by enemy action. The top part of the site, onto Osborne Road, was developed for housing. The chapel on Clarence Road was sold and in 1967 was run by the Plymouth Brethren[5]. Today (2023), the chapel is East Cowes, Evangelical Church.
