Enterprise Bus Service (Wavell)

Wavell's Enterprise Bus Service was started by Joseph Henry in 1921 and operated out a garage in South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight.

Later his son, Martin John, joined his father in the business and continued after his father's death.

In the 1920's they operated four routes; Newport to Cowes, via Marks Corner; Newport to East Cowes, via Whippingham; Newport to Sandown via Arreton & Apse Heath; and East Cowes to Ryde via Wootton & Binstead.

In 1929 an Enterprise bus, on the East Cowes to Ryde route, crashed and toppled over while turning from Union Street, Ryde into, what was then, Pier Street. Two people, the bus conductor and a visitor, were killed and others injured. This later led to the demolishing of the Pier Hotel and other properties on the north side Pier street to widen the road.

In 1951 they took over Blake's Bus Service which operated a bus service from Newport to Sandown via Downend and Newchurch. By then they were down to two routes; Newport to Sandown via Blackwater & Arreton; and Newport to Sandown via Downend, Arreton & Newchurch (the ex Blake's route). These route licences and 6 buses were sold to Southern Vectis Omnibus Company in 1951.
