Sandown Telephone System
The Sandown Telephone exchanged opened by the National Telephone Company – thus completing the Island telephone system as at first arranged. Steps were then being taken to extend the system to Freshwater.[1]
In 1911 the National Telephone Company call office was listed as in Leed street.[2]
The 1935 Kelly’s Street Directory lists at 31 Leed Street the Post Office Telephone exchange and James Hendy.
The 1951 Kelly’s Street Directory lists 31 Leed Street as the Post Office Telephone exchange and Walter Stevens.
December1966 saw the closing of the manual exchange and the opening of a new automatic exchange a few doors up Leed street at 21 Leed Street.[3]
In May 1985 subscribers of the Brading manual exchange were switched to the Sandown auto exchange.[4]
